Richmond Flying Squirrels

The Richmond Flying Squirrels came to town in 2010 after the former Richmond Braves relocated to Georgia. The Squirrels are a minor league baseball team and the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The Squirrels play at The Diamond on the site formerly known as Parker Field. Negotiations continue with the city and surrounding localities for a much needed new stadium.

Colonial Downs

Colonial Downs in nearby New Kent County is Virginia’s only pari-mutuel horse racetrack. Colonial Downs has special events year round and features a summer thoroughbred racing season and a fall harness season. Next to Belmont, the 1 1/4 mile dirt track is the nation’s second largest and the Secretariat Turf Course is the widest grass surface track anywhere in North America.

NASCAR

Richmond International Raceway is the home of two major NASCAR weekends which feature the NASCAR Spring Cup Series and the NASCAR Nationwide Series. The track is known as America’s Premier Short Track and offers fans unique views of side-by-side racing.

VCU Rams Men’s Basketball

In season, be sure to check out the VCU Rams men’s basketball wreak havoc under the leadership of Coach Shaka Smart. The home game atmosphere at the Stuart C. Siegel Center is one of the most electrifying in the country. Best known for their 2011 NCAA Division run to the Final Four, the Rams joined the Atlantic 10 Conference in the 2012-13 season. The VCU Pep Band (The Peppas) has been voted one of best college pep bands.

VCU Rams play baseball at The Diamond and soccer at Sports Backers Stadium. In addition to VCU, the Richmond Spiders play most sports in the Atlantic 10 Conference with the exception of football which is in the Collegiate Athletic Association. The Virginia Union Panthers play football in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

 

Richmond Kickers

The Richmond Kickers play in the USL Professional Division and are one of the oldest continuously operating professional soccer teams in the U.S. Rob Ukrop, of the family that owned Richmond’s grocery chain of the same name is the owner, as well as a former Kickers player. The Kickers play in Richmond’s City Stadium.

Richmond Raiders Pro Football

The Richmond Raiders began playing indoor football in 2010 as part of the American Indoor Football Association. They are now a member of the Professional Indoor Football League and play their games in the Richmond Coliseum.

Richmond Sports Backers

Richmond Sports Backers sponsor events throughout the year to promote an active community lifestyle in the city and surrounding areas. The 2013 Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k drew more than 38,600 participants who ran or walked along Richmond’s famed Monument Avenue. The Anthem Richmond Marathon held in November has been called “America’s Friendliest Marathon.” New in 2013 was RVA Streets Alive which was a 2.5 mile loop across the James River and back featuring activities and fitness vendors along the way.

2015 World Road Cycling Championships

Richmond was awarded the 2015 World Road Cycling Championships which is nine-day event with 12 Championship cycling races for men and women. The event will be held September 19-27, 2015, will feature 1,500 athletes and is expected to draw a television audience of 300 million.

Since 1998 Richmond has hosted the Xterra (off-road triathlon) East Championship on the James River Park trails.

 

James River Runners

James River Runners has been operating on the James River since 1979 and provides canoeing, rafting, kayaking and tubing trips down the James and over the only Class IV rapids in an urban setting.
